What Website Development Involves
A website project is mostly decisions, not code. These are the stages we work through, and what each one is actually for.
Discovery & requirements
We start with what the site has to achieve — who it is for, what action you want visitors to take, what content exists already and what needs writing. Most weak websites are weak because this step was skipped.
Structure & content plan
Pages, navigation and URL structure are planned before any design work. Getting this right early is what makes a site straightforward to extend later, and what search engines use to understand the site.
Design
Layouts are designed around your brand and the content that will actually go in them — not a template filled in afterwards. Designs are reviewed on desktop and mobile before development begins.
Development
The site is built responsively, tested across screen sizes, and structured with semantic HTML so it works for assistive technology and search engines alike.
Search foundations
Titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, canonical URLs, image alt text, a sitemap and structured data are part of the build, not an afterthought bolted on later.
Launch & handover
Deployment, DNS, HTTPS, analytics and Search Console setup, followed by a walkthrough so your team knows how to run it.
Support & enhancement
Sites need changes. We handle updates, new sections and integrations as your business moves, rather than handing over and disappearing.
Website Development FAQs
How long does a website take to build?
It depends on the number of pages, how much content already exists and how many integrations are involved. A focused brochure site and a large site with e-commerce and custom functionality are very different projects, so a realistic schedule comes after the requirements are clear rather than before.
How much does website development cost?
Cost is driven by scope: page count, custom design work, functionality, integrations, content creation and ongoing support. We would rather understand what you actually need and give you a considered figure than quote a headline number that changes later.
Will my website work on mobile?
Yes. Sites are built responsively and tested across phone, tablet and desktop widths. In most sectors the majority of traffic now arrives on a phone, so mobile is treated as the primary case rather than an afterthought.
Do you redesign existing websites?
Yes. Redesign work usually starts with an audit of what is there — what is working, what is costing you visitors, what content is worth keeping and what URLs need preserving or redirecting so existing search visibility is not lost.
Is SEO included in website development?
The technical foundations are: clean URLs, correct heading structure, unique titles and meta descriptions, canonical tags, image alt text, a sitemap, structured data and fast, crawlable pages. Ongoing content and link work is a separate, continuing activity — see our SEO and digital marketing services.
Can the website connect to other systems?
Where the other system exposes an API or another suitable integration method, yes — payment gateways, CRMs, ERPs, courier and shipping services, or an internal application. What is possible depends on what that system makes available.
Will I be able to update the content myself?
That depends on how the site is built. Content management can be included where your team needs to make regular changes. Where updates are rare, a simpler build is often cheaper to run and faster to load.
Do you build e-commerce websites?
Yes. E-commerce adds catalogue, cart, checkout, payment and order handling, and usually needs to connect to shipping and inventory. If you are shipping physical goods, it is worth planning that link early — see our courier management software work.
What happens after the site launches?
Sites need maintenance: updates, security patches, content changes and new sections as the business grows. We can handle this on an ongoing basis, or hand over cleanly if you have an internal team.
Building something that also needs an app? See our mobile app development services. Building a business system rather than a website? Start with what we build.
